Cement slurry set retarding potential of oil palm kernel shell wastes for oil well operations

One major problem of the agro –industries in Nigeria is management its wastes generated from processes. These can be converted to useful products and are attractive for being an alternative solving disposal issues industry. This study assessed synthesis lignosulfonates Oil Palm Kernel Shells (OPKS) evaluated performance as a retarder additive oil well cementing operations. OPKS was synthesized using pulping process filtered isolate lignin cellulose hemicellulose. Sulfonating carried out Sodium Bisulfite (NaHSO3) produce sodium lignosulfonate. Thereafter, Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) applied determine functional groups present product. The product through thickening time test automated HTHP Cement Consistometer at different temperatures, concentrations consistency (Bc). A linear increment cement slurry up 40% with increase observed relation reference (commercial retarder). results also showed that has potential retard set slurry, however maximize retardation function, more investigations needs purify modify lignin. Its utilization will promote preservation environment reduce overdependence on expensive additives.
